If you are empowered, you suddenly have a lot of work to do because you have the power to do it. If you are unempowered, you are less dominated by the opportunities in front of you. In other words, you have an excuse to not do the work. You have a way out. You have the security of being able to do what you have always done and get away with it. If you are empowered, suddenly you must step out, innovate and create. The cost, however, of being unempowered is people’s self-expression. They always have the feeling that they have something in them that they never really gave, never really expressed. By simply revealing the payoffs and costs of being unempowered, people have a choice. They can begin to see that it is possible to make the choice to be empowered rather than to function without awareness. Empowerment requires a breakthrough and in part that breakthrough is a kind of shift from looking for a leader to a sense of personal responsibility The problems we now have in communities and societies are going to be resolved only when we are brought together by a common sense that each of us is visionary. Each of us must come to the realization that we can function and live at the level of vision rather than following some great leader’s vision.

You and I want our lives to matter. We want our lives to make a real difference, to be of genuine consequence in the world. We know that there is no satisfaction in merely going through the motions, even if those motions make us successful, or even if we have arranged to make those motions pleasant. We want to know we have made some impact on the world. In fact, you and I want to contribute to the quality of life. We want to make the world work.

CREATING ECSTASY
In the presence of relationships that simply swept him away, Werner remarked, “I remember myself saying things like, ‘Marvelous, fantastic… but, an accident.’ We think that such things happen only by chance. They are not accidents. We have the power to create the space of relationship, to achieve mastery of our relationships. I’m not talking about being in ecstasy, or working little by little toward ecstasy. I’m talking about being willing to come from ecstasy, even when you are being serious, or having a problem, or not even thinking about ecstasy.”

“Love is granting another the space to be the way they are and the way they are not.”
– Werner ErhardPhotograph on the cover “Celelebrating Your Relationships” an audio tape by Werner Erhard. A commenter at Amazon.com had this to say about this cassette:
The inside cover of this truly remarkable cassette tape says this about its content: “You have the ability to create conditions in your life for miraculous relationships, relationships that are brilliantly alive, magical expressions of love”. I bought my copy of the tape at a seminar run by the London, England office of Werner Erhard & Associates in the late 1980s. I love this tape and love sharing it with my family and friends.Recorded at a large live event given by Werner Erhard, it perfectly captures for me the spirit and power of this man as he assists people in grappling with the issues of what it is to be alive. On the tape Werner talks, reads poems, and interacts with individual participants. (I had part of one of the poems he reads, ‘I carry your heart with me’ by e.e. cummings, read out at my wedding). Listening to the tape is an empowering, alive, challenging ‘on the court’ experience. There is a real magic here and plenty of ‘juice’. People who have done the est training, the Forum (like I did in 1989), the Landmark Forum or programs related to these will have a special listening for this, but maybe you don’t need to have participated in those courses to ‘get’ this.
